These guidelines can help amateur gardeners to understand the nutrients requirement of their plants.

The actively growing plants contains 75 to 85% water with the remaining portion composed primarily of organic compound frequently referred to as dry matter. These organic compounds are composed of 16 essential elements that are directly involved in plant nutrition and are necessary for the plant growth.

All the nutrients required by the plants are divided into 2 major groups.

1. Macro Elements: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sulfur, Calcium and Manganese are required in large quantities.

Nitrogen is mainly required for the leaf growth but can influence root growth, leaf color and disease proneness.

Phosphorus is mainly required for root development and plant maturation. It also plays an important role in reproduction of plants.

Potassium is very essential for plants growth. It influences plants in flowering, rooting, drought, heat, cold hardiness, disease proneness and wear tolerance in grass.

Role of Calcium, Sulfur and Manganese play different roles in the complex Biochemical processes in the plants during food synthesis.

1. Micro Nutrients: The micronutrients iron, manganese, zinc, copper, molybdenum, boron and chlorine are just as important as the macronutrients but are required by the plants in much smaller amounts. Most soils have adequate supplies of these micronutrients, since the plant requirements are relatively small.

Soils having high sand content are deficient in micro nutrients and require application of micronutrients. Certain micronutrients can become toxic if present in the soil at the higher concentration.

In my next article I would explain the different methods of applying fertilizers to achieve good growth and vigor in the plants.

The management of Arabian Sea Country Club has dedicated Swimming Pool Complex for Ladies on every Wednesday of the week, effective September 1 st 2006.  

Arabian Sea Country Club is examining the possibility of introducing a Hydrofoil boat service from Marina Club to the Russian Beach. The Club would then transport the members from the beach by road. (Total estimated time - 25 minutes)

Recipe of the month (Feb-2007)

HERB STEAK WITH COFFEE CHILLI SAUCE

INGREDIENTS

MARINATION FOR STEAK

Crushed Black Pepper, Worcestershire Sauce, Oil, Oregano & Garlic.

On a medium bowl mix together with all above items for only steak marination.

FOR SAUCE

Oil, Chopped onion, Garlic, Red bell pepper, crushed black pepper, green chili, paprika, cumin powder, tomato paste, tomato juice, coffee & salt.

On a medium pan put oil and heat to be low then put chopped onion on it for 2 to 3 min to take a light brown colour then garlic, red bell pepper, crushed black pepper, green chili, paprika powder, cumin powder & tomato paste.

Then cook in to 2 to 3 mins, and then put tomato juice & coffee add on it.

PREPARATION

Cook 15 to 20 mins steak then put sauce on it and then serves.

• Chappals & sandals without straps are not permitted.
• National dress to include waistcoat or sherwani
• Shorts and sleeveless T-shirts are not permitted in the dining or lounging areas.
• Shirts without collar are not permitted in dining areas or on the Golf course.
• Jeans are not permitted in the Club.
• Dress code at the golf course and swimming pool is specified on their respective notice boards.
• Maids, drivers & guards are not permitted in the Clubhouse and dining areas.
• Mobile phones are prohibited in dining/Lounging areas.
• Smoking is only permitted in designated dining areas.

Our golf course is in superb condition. The immaculate undulating greens and manicured fairways are unmatched anywhere in the country

Golfing Tips

Pitching

Pitching over a hazard such as a bunker can be quite nerve racking, with the golfer trying to scoop the ball up into the air, only to strike the top of the ball driving it into the bunker ahead.

• Select a lofted club, e.g. Wedge or Sand Iron and trust the club's loft to give your shot height.

• Swing down, taking a small divot after striking the ball, with the image of playing a low shot with little club loft at impact.

Using reverse psychology by trying to hit a low shot, stops the golfer from trying to add loft to the club, which causes them to swing up too early, striking the top of the ball.
